The Sun warms a tiny top layer of water in the sea changing it from a liquid to a vapour. As the air rises it begins to cool and form clouds (thick water vapour). The cooled water vapour forms little droplets of water that begin to fall back to the ground. The water feeds streams and rivers as it begins its long journey back to the sea. The process of evaporation, condensation, precipitation and runoff is the Water Cycle. Water Cycle : Stage 1 When the Sun heats liquid water, it becomes invisible water vapour in a process called evaporation. Water Cycle : Stage 2 When water vapour is cooled, it changes into water droplets that form clouds or fog. This process is known as condensation. Water Cycle : Stage 3 When cooled even further water droplets grow larger and become precipitation falling to the ground as rain, snow, hail of sleet. Water Cycle : Stage 4 If precipitation falls onto land the water sinks into the ground and flows downhill into other larger bodies of water and eventually back to the sea.
